How to Know if Your Volvo has an Issue with the Cooling Fan

Problem With Your Cooling Fan - Check for Recalls

Community Automotive Repair in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is always on a mission to inform our customers of their vehicle’s repair and maintenance needs, but we also stay up to date with recalls. In 2009, Volvo experienced an alarming number of recalls for their cooling fan modules experiencing failures, which spelled disaster for many Volvo owners in the warmer seasons. In particular, the 2008 and 2009 years of the following models shared this issue: S80, V70, and XC70. Volvo informed their vehicle owners that their engine cooling fans stopped working because of software programming errors found in the fan control module due to some conditions. This module is used to prevent the engine from overheating. This fan will automatically turn on when it senses the engine is getting too hot so as to avoid engine failure. This module also supplies fresh air into the car cabin by controlling the condenser and blower that produces cool air through the A/C unit.

Signs of Failure

How does a Volvo’s cooling fan begin to wear out? There are several ways to monitor for signs that your Volvo’s cooling fan may need some attention. If you detect warm air in the cabin despite the A/C being on, it could mean the motor may have failed in the component. It is possible that you could be experiencing an overheating engine if your temperature gauge reads a higher temperature than normal. The fan may be turning slower in speed and unable to cool your vehicle properly. Beware of never attempting to drive while your engine is at risk of overheating. It could cause severe damage to the vehicle and the engine itself if it is unable to keep itself cool. This also applies if your fan stops blowing air altogether. You will notice that there is no supply of air blowing through the vents at all, and the car will be hot and stuffy, especially in the warmer seasons. This could be a sign that the cooling fan is damaged and can increase the chances of a blown head gasket. Last, if you notice your cooling fan is still running even after shutting off your engine, it could be a sign of a faulty cooling fan module. Cooling fans are only meant to run during the time the engine’s temperature gets past a particular limit in keeping the engine cool. They will automatically shut down when the engine’s temperature has reached an agreeable setting.
