Requirements:

  • Competently comfortable in diagnosing, repairing, and servicing European vehicles
  • Valid Michigan Driver's License, clean record for insurability
  • Able to lift 70 lbs. and buddy lift beyond that
  • State of Michigan Mechanic Certification

Level I Technician

  • Basic automotive skills, Use of hand tools and power tools to successfully complete basic repairs and services.
  • Basic parts replacement: starters, alternators, batteries, cables, spark plugs, filters, simple water pumps, valve cover gaskets, brake pad & rotors, or shoe replacement; all fluids like, chassis, oil change, transmission, coolant, brake, power steering, differentials, transfer case, etc.
  • Personal diagnostic tools and equipment necessary to perform functions of this skill level.
  • 1-2 years of automotive repair and service experience in professional setting.
  • State certified in a minimum of 4 to 8 areas.
  • Production hours expectation: 35-42.5 hours.

Level I techs (Entry level): Typical earning between $50,000  - $60,000.

Level II Technician

  • Able to perform all Level I criteria.
  • Experienced automotive repair skills, basic diagnostic skills, use of basic diagnostic equipment & tools.
  • Engine, transmission, clutch replacement. timing belt, cylinder head, major engine components, drive train, suspension repair & replacement.
  • Must use and document a logical cause and effect method for recommending repairs.
  • Personal diagnostic tools and equipment necessary to perform functions of this skill level.
  • 2-3 years of professional automotive technician experience.
  • State certifications required.
  • ASE certifications preferred, once hired pursues certifications.
  • Production hours expectation: 42.5-50 hours.

Level II professional techs (B-Level): Typical earnings between $60,000 - $75,000.

Level III Technician

  • Able to perform all Level I & II criteria.
  • Advanced automotive diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to identify root cause of the problem and then decide, plan, and act on solutions.
  • Must have the drive and initiative to persevere through the most difficult and complex symptoms and problems.
  • Understand the inter-related systems and recognize multiple, underlying, or secondary problems and failures.
  • Take responsibility for the decision, recommendation, and repair of the problem.
  • Reason and rationalize correlating symptoms or behaviors supporting diagnostic conclusions with the cause and recommended corrections. 
  • Emissions failures, drivability diagnosis, computer, and electronic controls system analysis.
  • Helps other technicians solve issues.
  • Advanced personal diagnostic tools and equipment necessary to perform functions at this skill level.
  • ASE Master Certified Technician.
  • 5 plus years of professional automotive technician experience.
  • Production hours expectation: 45-60 hours.

Level III master certified techs (A-Level): Typical earnings between $75,000 - $90,000.

Level VI Technician

  • Able to perform all Level I, II, & III criteria.
  • Test and inspect vehicle drivability concerns, electrical systems, data network, and immobilizer systems.
  • Completes programming and updates.
  • Comprehends complex vehicle systems.
  • Helps other technicians solve issues.
  • Advanced or specialized experience and credentials to perform services and repairs.
  • ASE Advanced Certification L1, L2, L3, or L4

Level IV diagnostic technician (advanced level): Typical earnings between $90,000 - $120,000
